Piercing Blade Needles vs Cannula Needles.

A Piercing Blade/Needle has a tri bevel (sharp on all three edges) and is designed specifically for body piercing purposes.

These single use needles are available in a range of sizes (to match the jewellery to be fitted) from 1mm,1.2mm,1.6mm,2mm, 2.5mm, 3.2mm, 4mm and 5mm.

A skilled piercer will prefer this type of needle and to maintain contact between needle and jewellery when performing the transfer.

This can be done by hand, pin taper, or with a hemostat (forceps).

Piercing Blade Needle always the best option for the piercing procedures.

A Cannula Needle has a single bevel (sharp on one edge) the bevel is short and has a sleeve of PTFE on the outside (with an I.V coupling at the opposite end). It is not designed to pierce through your body.

Cannula Needles are limited in gauge size from 0.8mm, 1mm, 1.2mm and 1.6mm, the ptfe sleeve increases the overall thickness

The bevel on a cannula is designed to create a flap of skin on entry so the ptfe sleeve can aid administration or draining of fluids, and once the sleeve is removed the way it entered the flap closes, helping with healing the entry wound.

Some piercers prefer to use a cannula as a shortcut. They can insert the jewellery into this plastic sleeve for ease of transfer, but this creates additional trauma, can cause unnecessary bleeding, and increased healing times due to the bevel, blunt cuff on the PTFE sleeve, and inaccuracy of diameter compared to jewellery measurement.

While both are far better than piercing guns/cartridges, a cannula should only be used in specific circumstances in a piercing environment as they are designed for medical purposes and not piercing.

When booking in always ask your piercer what equipment they will be using, needle and jewellery type, and why.

It's your body, you only get one.
